Try listening to 'Death from Above 1979' or '80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster' (the latter are madder than a box of frogs) - might just renew your faith in modern rock music.

I don't think that's the issue. The mastering quality of them is fine, it's Rick Rubin's minimalistic production approach that I've never liked. Which results in many tracks not sounding as half as powerful as they should.

I wonder if Slayer's older albums have been remastered in the way that Led Zeps have- on the original cd version of Led Zep IV, it sounded like Bonham was hitting paint tins down a well on When the Levee Breaks

You brought Metallica into it, so I thought I'd bring Slayer into it.

But generally metal albums that were recorded in the 80s aren't going to stand up to production standards of the 90s and beyond. Obviously...

I've got a couple of Slayer albums hill and what's always struck me about them is how poorly recorded their guitar tones sound. South of Heaven sounds to me like it was recorded with a microphone in the next room. Seasons in the Abyss sounded a lot better though.

As for forgetting the band? Well no, there was no point as they are far off the purpose of the actual post. The premise was to discuss how wussy a lot of British rock is and comparing it to the true innovative greats of Purple, Sabbath and Led Zep. Slayer don't really enter into it.
