Baddies - Tiger Face Review

Baddies have been around since 2007 with their debut album ‘Do the Job’ being released in 2009, two years on and Baddies have just launched their new single ‘Tiger Face’. If you are unaware of Baddies, you may like to know that they hail from Southend and are made up of identical twins Michael (vocals, guitars) and Jim Webster (drums), Simon Bellamy (guitar) and Danny Rowton (bass).
For anyone who was drawn-in by the critical acclaim that saw Baddies name dropped by many including the Guardian newspaper as a band to watch, then prepare for a development of sound. Moving away from the punkier fuelled elements of ‘Do the Job’ and comparisons to Queens of the Stone Age, Baddies have floated ‘Tiger Face’ as a teaser of a prelude to their second album.
...
Opening with a quiet mantra that you should “come on, put on the tiger face” accompanied with an intro of finger click, soft drum and rhythm guitar that bears comparison to the opening of Survivor’s ‘Eye of the Tiger’ only with a little more punch and speed. The drums and jangly guitars push the track on into a third phase of affected vocals and drum patters, the whole track then keys into a chorus that has elements of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in style, before the quiet mantra returns and the whole track runs back through a similar pattern.
There is however a feeling that everything is building up to something as Michael Webster’s vocals become ever more passionate and aggressive in nature, until the earlier mantra becomes a chant as other band members join in. The fullness of sound then suddenly switches to simple drums and synthesiser before the whole track drops into silence.
If ‘Tiger Face’ is a sample of what Baddies are likely to be producing on their second album, then they are a band worth listening out for. Expect ‘Tiger Face’ to become as catchy as hell at a festival near you, complete with jerky spiky dancing and Phoenix Nights' Young Kenny look-alikes.
