Butterfly Fan The Inferno - Sunset Scavengers/i Coma Review

Despite the fact that Butterfly Fan The Inferno (BFTI) have been around for years, their low output of music in the physical form may mean that they are fairly new to many listeners. So for the uninitiated, BFTI are from Birmingham, with a current line-up (they’ve had a few changes over the years) of Jase Holgate (bass), Paul Collins (drums), Tony Wilkinson (guitar) and John Kelly (vocals & guitar).
Whilst debut single Brassneck provided some rock / ska fusion, both Sunset Scavangers and i Coma have more in common with BFTI's other debut a-side Fanatic. The PR release for Sunset Scavengers describes the introduction as being "reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age" which is interesting as although there is the strong semblance of a guitar riff at the start, it lacks the heavier leanings that push Queens of the Stone Age into those rock / metal blurred boundaries. Instead the drum and licks of guitars are joined by John Kelly’s distinctive vocals, which are deep and rich. There’s something big and bold about Sunset Scavangers as there is about much of BFTI’s work to date, with the real hallmarks of quality rock. The guitar solo gives way to vocals and cymbals before the main riff returns. John’s muffled chanting of "Am I predictable" pushes the whole track onto its satisfying conclusion.
i Coma again is swathed in rockness, allowing the guitar to drive chords into the opening segment, before the vocals tone everything down to a lighter moment. Yet there is real guitar energy to feed the track into a rabble rousing chorus and it's almost impossible to resist the urge not to nod your head / tap your foot / air guitar (presumably you can also air drum?) along to i Coma.
BFTI have yet again produced two singles that just leave the listener wanting more and hopefully this is a prelude to; dare it be mentioned; an album? Although if you take John and Pat’s lyrics to i Coma literally "I go somewhere else from time to time, that keeps me fresh, that keeps me alive", it maybe sometime before we hear from BFTI (unless you’re going to see them live), but on this strong showing, lets hope it isn’t too long.
