Luminaires - Solid Gold Review

To get the formalities out of the way, Luminaries comprise of Aaron Sands (Vocals, Guitar), Scott Burwood (Drums), Drew McErlain (Bass, Backing Vocals), Harry Patterson (Guitar) and Shaun ‘Skilaz’ Skerritt (Keys/Synth). All the lads come from London and have already gained some decent coverage through inclusion on the homepage of Myspace, so they must be doing something right.

"Tonight, tonight, you know we’re solid gold" is the repeated phrase that opens Luminaries’ Solid Gold complete with bouncing drums and electronic rhythms, this is a confident opening for a band emerging into the music scene. The guitar and drums pick up the pace giving the track a real indie feeling, whilst the emergence of the bouncy electronic rhythm is reminiscent of Bloc Party; of whom the band have already been likened to. However, the vocals and chorus are extremely catchy and feel swathed in the circling of laser lights. As a minor education lesson at this point, a resting heart beat can be as little as 60 beats per minute, thankfully when Aaron sings "tonight we dance to the sound of our own beating hearts" the pace is pretty electric and certainly above that resting guide, this is certainly not Pink Floyd’s Speak to Me. In fact overall Solid Gold is a track so fueled with the bounce of a nightclub that it continues effortlessly to its conclusion.

It can be very difficult; on one track; to make a considered judgement about a band, but there is enough electro-indie-dance fun to make Luminaires a band; that from the variety of musical styles and the individuality of Aaron’s vocals; worthy of keeping an ear out for.

Sorry rock fans. Any more "music" like this and I'm going to have to change the name of the site to Grumpy >:XX >:XX

Don't worry. Some guitar and true metal content coming soon.

Sadly Radio 1's Newsbeat's comment that "2009: The year British indie guitar music died" seems a little premature :p

Don't worry I've got some Italian rock on the way
