Wings in Motion - 2011 Promo Review

Harry checks out this blistering promo from Greek melodic death metal band Wings in Motion and likes what he hears...
...
Forgive me for sounding like a pathetic genre know it all - oh how I hate those - but Wings in Motion aren't doing themselves any favours working under the label "melodic death metal" as it's not the best description of the great music on offer here in this four-track promo.
Progressive, melodic and featuring more clean vocals than death stylings - Wings in Motion are much more likely to find fans who enjoy the work of Symphony X or even Dream Theater's heavier moments.
That quibble aside there's plenty to enjoy about Wings in Motion's latest taster. Most obviously the vocals of Andre Boutos. His soaring style is very reminiscent of Symphony X's Russell Allen or even (dare I say it) Ronnie James Dio (peace be upon him). However Andre should ditch the death element of his vocal range. Much as I like death metal I think his clean vocals suite the band's music much better and the twin guitar attack of Pete Tross and Tasos Asonitis provides all the heavy the band needs.
The four songs on offer are chunky slabs of technical progressive metal with plenty of great riffs and solos to enjoy. Keyboards play a dominant part too which does lead to some issues with the production. At times the promo dissolves into a wall of sound and I'd have preferred the guitars tracked evenly left/right with the keyboard in the middle rather than everyone falling over each other. Perhaps you can't record heavy metal in Dobley, or something.
Okay, enough nitpicking, Wings in Motion are clearly a band with plenty to offer fans of technical and progressive metal. The songwriting is strong, the performances from all members of the group tasteful yet skilful and I eagerly await a full album from the band. If you like your metal played by dexterous hands and sung by a performer who actually has a bloody great voice then do give Wings in Motion a go.
Check out the band's official website for more information and a chance to listen to the latest tracks.
